Significance

Behind the Label

Flying fish

Flying fish are a fascinating species found in the waters around Catalina Island, particularly during the warmer months. These fish can leap out of the water and glide through the air for considerable distances, using their pectoral fins like wings. This behavior is thought to help them escape predators, and it creates a spectacular sight, especially when illuminated by spotlights at night.

As a result, flying fish tours became a unique and popular attraction, dating back to the early 1920s . Today, the flying fish tours are a well-established part of Catalina Island's tourism industry. The tours typically run during the summer months, from May to September, when the flying fish are most active.
